‘Record safety scores’: These are Tasmania’s safest swimming spots this summer

Tasmanian aquatic venues have achieved record safety ratings, making them among the safest places to swim this summer.

Belgravia Leisure-managed facilities – Smithton Wellbeing Indoor Recreation & Leisure (SWIRL) and Splash Devonport Aquatic and Leisure Centre – maintained their prestigious 5-Star Safety accreditations in 2025 following successful Aquatic Facility Safety Assessments (AFSA).

Both venues recorded exceptional results:

  • SWIRL: 98.41% safety rating, up 5.41% from last year.
  • Splash Devonport: 98.44% safety rating.

The venues were the first in Tasmania to achieve the 5-Star Accreditation. Overall scores also improved significantly, with SWIRL at 97.5% (up 4.5%) and Splash Devonport at 98.12% (up 7.12%).

High-performing areas included aquatic programs and first aid, both scoring 100%. The Aquatic Safety team continues to innovate, introducing new resources for inflatable operations such as risk assessments, inspection checklists, and pre-operational guidelines. Industry leaders, including Lifesaving Victoria, are also developing enhanced inflatable safety standards for future assessments.

The AFSA is designed to provide swimming pool operators with a comprehensive overview of their safety standards. The assessment enables the development of a detailed report benchmarked against a range of industry, state and national standards, guidelines and legislative provisions.
